Phonics at Bromet Primary School

At Bromet Primary School, we use the Monster Phonics programme as the foundation of our phonics teaching in Robin, Sparrow, Swift, and Kingfisher classes. This highly engaging, child-centred approach is systematically designed to support children in becoming confident readers and writers through meaningful and interactive learning experiences.

Implementation of Phonics at Bromet

Systematic Phonics Teaching:

  • Monster Phonics follows a clear, structured progression aligned with the Letters and Sounds framework, ensuring continuity and consistency across the school.
  • Daily 30-minute phonics lessons include reviewing, reading, writing, and applying phonic skills.
  • Decodable books that align with the Monster Phonics programme are used in EYFS and KS1 to reinforce learning and build confidence in reading.

Targeted Support:

  • Our phonics sessions are tailored to meet the needs of every child.
  • We operate “Keep up, not catch up” intervention groups to provide additional support, ensuring all pupils can progress successfully through the stages.
  • Assessments inform planning to target gaps in knowledge effectively.

Staff Training and Resources:

  • All staff are trained in delivering high-quality phonics sessions using Monster Phonics resources.
  • Parent engagement is supported through login access to Monster Phonics, along with phonics webinars to extend learning at home.

Engaging and Multi-Sensory Learning:

  • Monster Phonics categorises sounds into ten colour groups, each represented by a monster character. This visual, multisensory approach increases engagement and helps children to identify and blend sounds effectively.

Features of Monster Phonics at Bromet:

  • Meet the Monsters: Children are introduced to engaging monster characters that make phonics fun and memorable.
  • Colour Coding: Sounds are visually represented with colours, helping children recognise graphemes and phonemes with ease.
  • Handwriting Integration: Letter formation and handwriting are taught alongside phonics to support fine motor skills and reinforce learning.
  • Parental Involvement: Parents are encouraged to participate in their child's phonics journey, with resources and training available to support learning at home.

Impact of Phonics at Bromet

  • Building Confident Readers: The structured approach ensures children develop a secure understanding of phonics, enabling them to decode and read fluently.
  • Improved Writing Skills: Integrating phonics with handwriting and spelling helps children apply their learning in written tasks.
  • Closing Gaps in Learning: Our focus on targeted interventions ensures all children make progress, regardless of their starting point.
  • Engaged Learners: The interactive, fun nature of Monster Phonics captivates children and fosters a lifelong love for reading and writing.
  • Prepared for the Future: By the end of Year 2, children leave KS1 with the skills needed to tackle the challenges of KS2 literacy with confidence.
