Physical Education at Bromet
At Bromet Primary School, we use the Get Set 4 PE curriculum to ensure all children meet the National Curriculum outcomes by the end of Year 6, fostering a lifelong love of physical activity and an understanding of how to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Each week, children participate in one PE lesson delivered by their class teacher, focusing on a range of skills, sports, and physical activities. Additionally, pupils in Years 4, 5, and 6 have the opportunity to attend swimming lessons at Everyone Active Leisure Centre in South Oxhey. These lessons are designed to ensure that all children achieve the national requirement of swimming at least 25 meters confidently.
Our PE curriculum encourages every child to develop confidence, teamwork, and the skills necessary for a healthy, active future.

EYFS
Physical development is a key focus in the Early Years Foundation Stage, with children engaging in daily energetic play in the outdoor learning area. Reception pupils participate in timetabled PE lessons, where they develop fundamental movement skills such as balancing, running, jumping, throwing, and catching.
Key Stage 1
In Key Stage 1, children build on their fundamental movement skills through activities such as gymnastics, dance, games, and athletics. Lessons are designed to foster independence, collaboration, and skill development, allowing children to work individually, in pairs, or in groups.
By the end of Key Stage 1, children are expected to:
- Master basic movements, including running, jumping, throwing, and catching.
- Develop balance, agility, and coordination and begin applying these in a range of activities.
- Participate in team games, learning simple tactics for attacking and defending.
- Perform dances using simple movement patterns.
Key Stage 2
In Key Stage 2, children apply and refine their skills across a variety of sports and activities, including dance, gymnastics, athletics, football, badminton and netball. Lessons emphasize teamwork, cooperation, and tactical thinking while also providing opportunities for individual growth and achievement.
By the end of Key Stage 2, children are expected to:
- Use running, jumping, throwing, and catching in isolation and in combination.
- Play competitive games, modified as needed, applying basic principles for attacking and defending.
- Develop flexibility, strength, technique, control, and balance.
- Perform dances using a range of movement patterns.
- Take part in a variety of sports, both individually and within a team.
- Compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best.
Swimming
In Years 4, 5, and 6, children attend swimming lessons where the focus is on ensuring children meet the following National Curriculum requirements:
- Swim competently, confidently, and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 meters.
- Use a range of strokes effectively.
- Perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.
By delivering a structured, inclusive, and engaging curriculum, Bromet Primary School equips every child with the skills, confidence, and enthusiasm to embrace a lifelong active lifestyle.
Impact
At Bromet Primary School, Physical Education is a foundation for lifelong physical activity and well-being. Through a diverse and inclusive PE curriculum, children experience a range of activities designed to foster enjoyment, confidence, and success in physical pursuits. By providing positive and meaningful experiences, we aim to inspire children to maintain an active lifestyle and understand the importance of physical activity for their health and well-being.
Opportunities to engage in sport and other challenging activities help children develop resilience, build character, and embed values such as fairness, respect, and teamwork. These experiences prepare them to confidently embrace the next stages of their learning journey, ensuring they are equipped to take full advantage of the sporting and physical opportunities available to them in education and beyond.
In addition to regular PE lessons, children at Bromet can join school football and netball teams, where they have the opportunity to compete against other schools. These experiences not only enhance their sporting skills but also foster teamwork, resilience, and a healthy competitive spirit. Representing their school in a team helps children develop a sense of pride and builds their confidence both on and off the field.
Through our PE curriculum and extra-curricular opportunities, Bromet pupils leave school with the skills, knowledge, and attitudes to lead healthy, active lives and to enjoy the social and physical benefits of sport throughout their lives.
