Summer Term

I hope you have all enjoyed the Easter break and are ready for your final term.

This blog tells you about the term ahead and what your children will be learning.

SATS

It is extremely important that you child does not miss any time from school.  The children will sit their SATs tests on Monday to Thursday the week beginning 8 May.  You should have already received a leaflet from school with these dates.

Tuesday 9 May English: Grammar, punctuation and spelling 2 papers: spelling; punctuation and grammar (including vocabulary)
Wednesday 10 May Mathematics 2 papers: arithmetic; mathematical reasoning
Thursday 11 May Mathematics 1 paper: mathematical reasoning

Maths:  This term the children will be revising areas of the mathematical curriculum they find difficult in preparation for the SATs tests.  Following on from this they will develop their skills by taking part in the Year 6 Enterprise topic which will cover life skills such as book keeping, learning about income and expenditure, profit making and the economies of scale when running a business.

English:  We will be developing our writing skills through a variety of genre including: fiction – story writing; persuasive – letter writing, this will also include editing and redrafting their writing.  We will be improving our speaking and listening skills through discussions, small group work and presentations.

Science:  We will continue to cover and revise topics, including planning, preparing and conducting experiments.  This includes using scientific terms and making a hypothesis.

Jigsaw PSHE:  All Jigsaw lessons are delivered in an age-and stage-appropriate way so that they meet children’s needs.

Relationships covers a wide focus looking at knowing how to make friends, trying to solve friendship problems when they occur (love and loss), help others to feel part of a group.  It also looks at power and control, showing respect in the way they treat other.  Also, being safe with technology, using technology positively and safely to communicate with friends and family.

Changing Me deals with understanding that everyone is unique and special.  That we can express and respect how we feel when change happens to themselves and others.  This includes looking at both the male and female reproductive systems.  It also covers knowing who to ask for help if they are worried about change and finally the change they are about to undertake by moving on to Secondary School.

Computing:  Through all our work we will be continuing to embed the importance of E-Safety.

We will be focusing on all the skills already taught throughout the year groups and also looking at how 3d graphical modelling enables us to explore objects which may not yet exist, or which would be difficult to observe in other ways.  We will explore examples such as mapping, planning, design and architecture, discussing the advantages and disadvantages of this technology.

PE:  We will be developing our ball and racket skills through sports including tennis and rounders.

Art:  Using a variety of mediums we will be focusing on landscapes, both locally and in making scenery for the end of year puppet theatre production.

Design Technology:  This will focus on preparing the scenery for the end of year puppet theatre production and also the making of the marionette puppets.

Music:  The children will experience the use of sound equipment and produce music for the end of year production.

RE:  This will continue to be taught by Mrs Bastable and will cover topics which include Buddhism and Christianity.  There will also be a session relating to moving on to Secondary School Life.

History and Geography:  The children will be looking at the development and growth of London focusing on iconic buildings of their time both old and new.  They will be looking in particular at the history of the Tower of London.

MFL:  This will continue to be taught by Mme Lawson and this term will focus on French in preparation for the day trip to France.
